History of the Serraglio Farmhouse
The oldest parts of the Serraglio farmhouse buildings date back to the XIII century. The square courtyard has buildings on three sides and a wall on the fourth. The name “serraglio” originally referred to a fortified system of walls with battlements that stretched from Valeggio sul Mincio to Villafranca. It was built by the Scaliger family from Verona to protect the land from the raids of armed gangs from Mantua. At the time, this impressive defence system was considered one of Europe’s best. In the XIX century, when the Austrians ruled the region, the walls were knocked down to make room for cultivated land. Very little now remains of those impressive walls. The current farmhouse was meant to serve as barracks.
